Cogi's Founder navigating a journey of his own.

My Journey to College Consulting

Like many first-generation college students, I had no idea how to prepare for college or choose the right one. My decisions were based on scholarships, marketing materials, and a "fun" overnight visit—not on strategy, affordability, or fit. I also had no understanding of student loans, learning strategies, or what the college experience would actually be like. Unsurprisingly, I struggled. My study habits were ineffective, and I was easily distracted by social life. After I failed my first semester, I was devastated.  So, like any rational person, I joined the Marines.

During my time in the Marines, I faced challenges that tested my resilience and problem-solving skills. Originally expecting a legal role, I was instead assigned to the infantry and later specialized in defense against chemical and biological weapons. This led to my deployment to the Middle East during the first Gulf War, where I served with distinction. Upon my return, I was meritoriously promoted and took on the responsibility of leading and training a squad of Marines. Through these experiences, I developed a strong sense of agency, confidence in my ability to solve complex problems, and a deep appreciation for adaptive and strategic thinking.

Returning to college with improved agency and a mature mindset made all the difference. I learned how to study effectively, engaged in high-impact learning experiences, accessed campus resources, and discovered a love for not only learning but also applying what I learned. I changed my major—twice—without realizing the financial impact, consequently I was paying off my student debt for decades.  But, for me there was a silver lining; I also found my passion for psychology and student success.

After graduating, I stumbled into a job advising and mentoring college students, and I had found my calling. Over the next 25 years, I worked at public, private, and online colleges across the U.S. and abroad, guiding students through academic and career decisions. I taught learning strategies, leadership, writing, time management, and critical thinking. My passion for improving student success led me to earn a Master's in Student Development and complete doctoral coursework in Learning & Technology. I became deeply involved in research, assessment, and consulting, helping campuses implement high-impact learning experiences and assess the student experience to understand student success better.

One of my most successful initiatives was a one-on-one peer advising program focused on reflective learning and goal setting. It significantly improved student retention and satisfaction and is now implemented on hundreds of campuses nationwide.

Through these experiences, I saw firsthand the systemic challenges in higher education—how too many students were left to navigate college on their own, often accumulating heavy debt and struggling to persist.

At the same time, I kept getting asked by friends and family for help with their child’s college search. Many were overwhelmed by financial aid, and others were uneasy making decisions based on rankings and glossy marketing mailers. Many also worried about their child’s ability to succeed once they got in. As I listened to students and parents, dug into the data, and analyzed resources, one thing became clear:

Middle-class families pay more than wealthy families and struggle to find affordable, high-quality colleges.

How you college matters much more than where you college”

That’s why I started Cogi!
